NYPL Bookfest: The Discussion

I probably don't have to tell you all, but one of my very favorite things to do is discuss YA literature. Just ask a certain librarian in Indy what we do every time we hang out. (Answer: go to at least one book store and roam the floor, discussing the titles and watching what kids pick up.) So, the discussion part of any event tends to be my favorite, even if I'm not very vocal. I only wish these things didn't usually require me to get up extra early.

I was part of a group discussing teen dystopias, quite possibly my favorite subsection of literature.
Our reading list:

1. The Giver by Lois Lowry
2. Siberia by Ann Halam
3. Rash by Pete Hautman
4. The Diary of Pelly D by L.J. Adlington
5. Uglies by Scott Westerfeld

It was a large, but largely soft spoken, group of people in a corner of a noisy room. This wasn't the ideal set up for conversation, but I there was still some good stuff going on. It's been just long enough that I no longer remember any of the finer points of discussion. One of the cool things, though was how the discussion was able to range beyond those listed above. Other books brought up: A Clockwork Orange, the rest of the Uglies series, Gathering Blue, Messenger, Feed . . . This is why I love this community.
